A romantic comedy set against the backdrop of America's nascent pro-football league in 1925. Dodge Connelly (George Clooney), a rakishly charming football hero, is determined to lead his team from bar fights to packed stadiums. However, after the team loses their sponsor, and the entire league faces certain collapse, Dodge convinces a college football star to join his ragtag bunch of players. Connelly hopes his latest move will help the nascent sport finally capture the country's attention. Welcome to the team Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski), America's favorite son. A golden-boy war hero, Carter has movie star good looks and unrivalled talent on the playing field. This new superstar is almost too good to be true, and Lexie Littleton (Renée Zellweger) aims to prove that's the case. A budding journalist hoping to play in the big leagues herself, Lexie is an indefatigable newswoman who suspects the veracity of Carter's war story. Meanwhile, while she digs for the truth, the two teammates become serious off-field rivals for her affections. As the evolving game of professional football becomes less like the freewheeling sport he once knew and loved, Dodge must fight to keep his team together while getting the girl of his dreams. Along the way, he learns that love and football have a surprisingly similar playbook, but he has one move he is saving just for the fourth quarter.
